April 2008 Edition

Hello Again Instructional Technology Leaders,

This is the eighth update of 2007-2008, and a lot is happening related to technology use in our schools. You may choose to either receive future updates by e-mail or subscribe to it via RSS.

1. Local District 5 Instructional Technology Leader Meeting for April

The next volunteer technology leadership/coordinator meeting of 2007-2008 for Local District 5 will be held 3:30-5:30pm on Thursday, April 17, 2008 at the Directors Conference Room, 2nd Floor, Local District 5, 2151 N. Soto Street, Los Angeles, CA 90032. Attendance is voluntary but does also provide an occasion when technology leaders can share ideas as well as learn about the latest in instructional technology.


2. Salary Point for Attending Infotech 2008: Excellence Through Innovation

Infotech 2008 is just a few days away on Saturday, April 12, 2008 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. The theme of this year’s event is “Excellence Through Innovation” and is held in collaboration with the Parent Collaborative. There will be many examples of technology-enhanced student work showcased by students themselves as well as opportunities to participate in workshops and connect with vendors and other organizations. From Local District 5, students from Humphreys Avenue Elementary School, Malabar Elementary School, Nightingale Middle School, and Utah Street Elementary will be involved in the event through their showcases. The highlight of the event will be the judging of finalists for the three divisions of the student competition. Local District 5 schools that entered the competition are Belvedere Middle School, Humphreys Avenue Elementary School, and Malabar Elementary School.

Parking and admission to this event will be free and everyone is invited.

You may also earn a salary point for attending Infotech 2008 by attending an opening session on April 7, 2008 at the ITD ITTB East Los Angeles Training Lab, 2151 N. Soto Street, Los Angeles, CA, 90032 and reporting out your Infotech experience during a culminating meeting on May 26, 2008

4) Click on the classes titled Infotech 2008 12th Annual Conference (Hybrid Salary Point Course) displayed in blue to begin enrollment process
5) Click on the orange Enroll Now button to add yourself to the enrollment list


3. CTAP Region 11 Technology Academies – $400 Compensation for Participating

New opportunities for teachers to increase technology proficiency are still available! Teachers can learn to effectively integrate technology into standards-based instruction by participating in a weeklong CTAP Region 11 Technology Academy. Several of the academies will be held at the ITD ITTB Training Room 2 located at the Local District 5 Office Building throughout the Summer, but you may choose to enroll in academies held at other locations. Visit http://ctap.lacoe.edu/content/Tech_Academies for details and to enroll in one of the academies.The CTAP Technology Academies are five-day trainings, designed for educators that need educational technology professional development at their level of proficiency. The objective is to ensure that classroom educators have the requisite skills, knowledge, and ability to effectively integrate technology into the curriculum.

Intended Audience: K-12 Teachers (Levels: Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced)

Los Angeles Unified School District will be providing compensation in the amount of $400 for those who attend a District-sponsored academy. You must be off-track (e.g. Single Track teachers must attend academies during the Summer break) to receive the compensation. Additionally, you can receive LAUSD salary point credit for completion of the Level II Academy.

4. Digital Voice Awards 2008 – Deadline: April 14, 2008

The California Technology Assistance Project (CTAP) Region 11 and Multimedia Services of the Instructional Technology Outreach division at the Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) invite K-12 school educators from Los Angeles County to submit exemplary classroom instructional technology projects to the Digital Voice Awards.
