1. Building Quality Learning Using Periodic Assessments – A Salary Point Class


Certificated employees can now take a salary point class focusing on the use of district periodic assessments to guide student learning. Participants will be introduced to the use of diagnostic Periodic Assessments as instructional tools for quality enhancement in: (1) planning standards-based instruction aligned to Instructional Guides, (2) assessing students, expediting data access using the reporting website, and communicating learning progress, (3) determining appropriate future teaching practices based upon assessment data, and (4) helping their students monitor their own learning through regular and consistent assessments.

4) Click on any of the classes titled Building Quality Learning Using Periodic Assessments displayed in blue to begin enrollment process

5) Click on the orange Enroll Now button to add yourself to the enrollment list


2. Infotech 2008: Excellence Through Innovation – Saturday, April 12, 2008


Infotech 2008 is just a few weeks away aon Saturday, April 12, 2008 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. The theme of this year’s event is “Excellence Through Innovation” and is held in collaboration with the Parent Collaborative. There will be many examples of technology-enhanced student work showcased by students themselves as well as opportunities to participate in workshops and connect with vendors and other organizations. From Local District 5, students from Humphreys Avenue Elementary School, Malabar Elementary School, and Utah Street Elementary will be involved in the event. The highlight of the event will be the judging of finalists for the three divisions of the student competition. Parking and admission to this event will be free and everyone is invited.

3. Doodle for Google Student Contest – Registration Closes on March 28


Doodle for Google offers young artists the chance to design the Google logo and perhaps have their artwork seen by people all over the world.

The theme for the U.S. competition is "What if...?; a lot of the fun will come from helping your students decide how to interpret that open-ended phrase. Google will display 40 finalist doodles online and invite the public to vote for their favorites. The winning doodler will receive a $10,000 college scholarship and their design will take over the Google.com homepage for a day (the winning school will also receive a $25,000 technology grant.

4. Closing the Digital Divide – Technology in Open Court Reading – March 29


Discover ways to effectively infuse technology into your curriculum to increase reading fluency, motivate reluctant writers, and promote higher level thinking—all without losing a minute of Open Court Reading time.


This one day intensive hands-on workshop presented by Mathew Needleman will help you to empower students to create eBooks and iMovies in ways that support state standards and your teacher's manual.


If possible, please bring a digital still camera (and connecting cable) and an Open Court manual (any unit is okay) extras of both will be available

5. Digital Voice Awards 2008 – Deadline: April 14, 2008


The California Technology Assistance Project (CTAP) Region 11 and Multimedia Services of the Instructional Technology Outreach division at the Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) invite K-12 school educators from Los Angeles County to submit exemplary classroom instructional technology projects to the Digital Voice Awards. Student-made curricular projects may be created with a variety of technology tools. For more information: http://ctap.lacoe.edu/DVAwards



6. Congratulations to CUELA Outstanding Teacher 2008


On March 7, 2008, Jose Rodriguez, a teacher from Humphreys Avenue Elementary School, was honored as the Computer-Using Educators of Los Angeles (CUELA) Outstanding Teacher for 2008. He was recognized for his contributions to the learning in his classroom (his students will be showcasing at Infotech 2008), to our fellow colleagues in LAUSD (he teachers salary point courses for the UPDATE Program), and to others around the world (he facilitates a Webcast Academy via the World Wide Web).
